Host-Read Ads

Part of Managing host-read advertising

Approving a host-read script without losing its natural voice

Approval should protect meaning, not flatten a host read into copy that anyone could recite.

Approval should protect meaning, not flatten a host read into copy that anyone could recite. Agree in advance which words are fixed—brand name, legal qualifier, offer terms and action—and which ideas the host may express in their own language.

Review a draft or recording for three things: is it clearly advertising, are the claims supportable, and does the listener know what to do? Spotify's creative guidance contrasts host-read ads with voice-read ads and notes that host reads are voiced by a show's host, usually in the style of the show, with the host acting as a surrogate or spokesperson for the brand. Do not insert “I use this every day” simply to make an ad sound personal.

Give feedback by explaining the concern and allowing a natural rewrite. “The offer is only for new customers; please make that condition audible” is more useful than silently replacing the host's whole paragraph.

Have the responsible brand or compliance reviewer approve the final meaning and any required terms. The AANA Code of Ethics is part of Australian advertising and marketing self-regulation and states that advertisements and other marketing communications should be legal, honest and truthful.

Archive the approved version and record any permitted variations. If the final recording differs materially, review it before release. Voice and accuracy can coexist when the boundary is explicit.
