Part of Selecting podcast partners
Reviewing episode content before a brand placement
Review representative episodes, record what you heard and decide whether a podcast's editorial setting suits a proposed brand message.
Listen to representative full episodes before choosing a podcast partner. Check what the show discusses, how the host treats those subjects and how a brand message would sound in that setting. A show description or a single clip gives too little context for that decision.
Choose episodes that represent the proposal
Ask which shows and episodes could carry the ad. Review a named episode if it is already available. If it has not been recorded, review recent episodes with a similar format and mark the proposed episode as unreviewed.
For a placement across a catalogue, include recent and older eligible episodes in the sample.
Record each episode's date and why it was selected. Listen through the introduction, discussion, transitions and existing sponsor segments.
Note recurring subjects, the host's manner and whether sponsor messages interrupt or fit the programme. Reviewing one release does not establish the character of every eligible episode.
Separate observation from judgement
Write down what you heard before deciding whether it suits the brand. Avoid labels such as “safe” or “premium” without the episode details behind them.
For example, note that a host explains unfamiliar terms before giving an opinion, then decide whether that approach would help with the proposed product.
Consider the sponsor's message in that setting. A product needing a careful eligibility explanation may be awkward in a rapid, joking sponsor segment; another format may give it room. That is a judgement about the sampled recordings and proposed message, not a rule about a genre's performance.
How different podcast formats affect brand message fit
- Fast-paced, joke-heavy segmentMay not suit products needing detailed explanation; risk of sounding forced or shallow.
- In-depth interview styleBetter suited for complex or high-value products; allows deeper messaging and credibility.
- Narrative storytellingCan integrate brands organically if aligned with plot; risk of mismatch if product feels out of place.
Resolve what listening leaves open
Ask whether the proposed episode's subject or format is known, when it will be available and whether the advertiser can decline a materially different placement.
If ads may run across older episodes, ask which ones are eligible and whether the publisher can limit the catalogue. For dynamic insertion, one downloaded copy may contain a different ad from another request.
This listening review helps decide whether the show is an editorial match. It cannot establish Australian audience location or forecast delivery; request those figures separately. Specific episode-theme restrictions and responses to unexpected content belong in the booking's suitability review.
Make a partner decision
For each candidate, keep the episodes examined, concrete observations and a proceed, change or hold decision. A change might mean another show, a different proposed episode or a message better suited to the host's style. Resolve material unknowns with the publisher before selecting the partner.
