Comparing baked-in ads with dynamic insertion

A baked-in podcast ad is embedded in an episode's media file.

A baked-in podcast ad is embedded in an episode's media file. A dynamically inserted ad is selected for an available slot at delivery; this is dynamic ad insertion (DAI). The distinction matters most for campaign dates, targeting, corrections and what remains in the archive.

Decide what needs to change later

Baked-in placement can suit an evergreen sponsor message tied closely to a particular episode. It also makes outdated offers harder to remove or replace, depending on the publisher's file-management process.

Dynamic insertion can support defined flights or different creatives for different eligible deliveries, but the buyer must confirm the publisher's actual targeting and replacement controls. Neither method guarantees that a listener heard the ad.

Ask two separate questions: who voices the message, and how does it enter the episode? Then specify the ad slot, affected shows or episodes, active dates and what happens if creative needs correction.

For targeting, baked-in is tied to the chosen episode; dynamic insertion can vary the creative across eligible deliveries. Ask the publisher what makes a delivery eligible and which targeting controls are available.

A baked-in correction or removal depends on the publisher's file-management process because the ad is in the episode file. Dynamic insertion can serve different creatives to eligible deliveries, but confirm whether replacement applies to past episodes and downloads.

Baked-in Ads vs Dynamic Insertion: Key Differences

  • Ad PlacementEmbedded in the episode's media file
  • Flexibility for ChangesLimited; requires publisher file management to update or remove
  • Targeting CapabilityTied to the episode; no dynamic variation across deliveries
  • Creative UpdatesManual replacement required; not automatically updated post-launch
  • Dynamic Insertion (DAI)Selected at delivery time; supports varied creatives and targeting
  • Eligible DeliveriesDepends on publisher’s targeting rules and campaign eligibility
  • Correction & ReplacementCan serve new creatives to eligible future deliveries; past episodes may not be affected

Compare reporting definitions

IAB Tech Lab's Podcast Measurement Technical Guidelines, Version 2.3, last updated 29 September 2026, describe measuring downloads, audience and ad delivery. The guidelines explain that episodes are downloaded for consumption and measurement is based on server logs, rather than continuous client playback observation.

Request the seller's definition of an ad-delivery event, filtration method and reporting window. For a baked-in ad, ask how older episode downloads are counted. For a dynamic ad, ask what happens when a slot is available but the campaign is ineligible or unfilled.

Use these answers to set a make-good rule before launch. A format choice is complete only when the team knows how the ad will be changed, removed and counted.

Reporting Definitions and Measurement Standards

Measurement Basis
Server logs from episode downloads
Ad-Delivery Event Definition
Seller-defined; must be clarified before campaign launch
Older Episode Downloads
Counted as ad delivery if baked-in; depends on publisher policy
Unfilled Dynamic Slots
No ad served if campaign is ineligible or unfilled
