Host-read ads versus produced podcast spots
Compare host-read and produced podcast ads by voice, creative control, production work, reuse and the limits of delivery reporting.
Choose a host read when one presenter's explanation carries the idea. Choose a produced spot when the wording must stay consistent or be reused across several shows. Compare the work and control each format demands. Neither voice always persuades more listeners.
Compare the production trade-offs
| Decision | Host-read ad | Produced spot |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | The show's host speaks in their own style. | A separately recorded voice delivers the message. |
| Use to consider | A show-specific explanation or a connection to its subject. | A repeatable message for several suitable shows or a tightly specified offer. |
| Creative control | Agree on factual boundaries and phrasing choices; confirm the approval process. | Approve the recording and check that each placement uses the current version. |
| Constraint to check | Host availability, recording lead time and permission to change or reuse the read. | Production specifications, accepted duration and permission to reuse the recording. |
Check that the host fits the audience and can explain the product accurately. Check that a produced spot's message makes sense without a screen.
Agree on the audio and its use
For a host read, supply a brief with the product, supported claims, key conditions, pronunciation and one listener action. Agree what the host may put in their own words, and whether a personal-use statement would be truthful.
Ask whether you can hear and approve the final audio before release. Resolve any changed material claim or lost essential condition before distribution.
For a produced spot, establish who writes, records, mixes and supplies the master. Check the seller's accepted length and technical specifications for the inventory being bought. Keep a version number and expiry date with any time-sensitive offer. Confirm whether the recording can be reused across the proposed shows and who will replace it if terms change.
For Australian consumers, check that claims about the product or service are supportable. The ACCC can require businesses to back up claims they make about their products or services. If a business misleads, the ACCC can investigate and may take compliance or enforcement action.
