Direct podcast bookings versus network packages
Compare direct podcast bookings with network packages by show control, coordination, reporting and substitution terms.
Book directly with a show or its representative when a particular host, show or episode is central to the campaign and you can manage the booking. Use a network package when one team must coordinate several shows or an eligible audience. The sales route alone does not determine the inventory: a network may sell both named-show sponsorships and targeted ads.
Decide what must be fixed
For a direct booking, ask the show owner or authorised representative to confirm what they can sell. Specify the show or episode, position, release or flight dates, host involvement and whether the ad stays in an episode or is inserted for a limited period. Confirm who approves the message and who can change it if an offer expires.
For a network package, ask which shows are included or the rules that select them. A package of named shows gives different control from delivery across eligible shows. Check whether you can exclude shows, receive show-level reporting and approve substitutions. Also confirm geographic controls for the proposed format; a selected-show sponsorship may offer fewer location options than a targeted-ad product.
Compare the work as well as the inventory
| Question | Direct booking | Network package |
|---|---|---|
| Who coordinates the work? | Confirm which tasks you and the show or representative handle | Confirm what the sales team coordinates across shows |
| What needs approval? | Establish approval for the placement, recording and replacements | Establish campaign rules and any separate host approvals |
| What can be reported? | Ask what the show's systems can provide | Ask which reporting unit and show-level detail the package includes |
| Main limitation to resolve | Can this seller meet the brief and document delivery? | How much control do you have over shows and substitutions? |
These are proposal questions, not guarantees attached to either route. A show may direct enquiries to a sales representative, and a network booking may still depend on each host approving the advertiser.
Direct Podcast Bookings vs Network Packages: Key Differences
- Who coordinates the work? You and the show or representative handle tasks for direct bookings. The sales team coordinates across shows for network packages.
- What needs approval?Placement, recording, and replacements require approval in direct bookings. Campaign rules and host approvals are needed for network packages.
- What can be reported?Reporting depends on the show’s systems for direct bookings. Network packages include reporting units and show-level detail.
- Main limitation to resolveCan the seller meet the brief and document delivery? For network packages, it's control over shows and substitutions.
Compare two proposals fairly
Send both sellers the same Australian audience, dates, creative requirements and exclusions. Ask each to identify the booked unit and the basis of its forecast. A promised slot in a named episode, estimated episode downloads and a goal for delivered ads are different commitments. Their headline totals are not interchangeable.
Check who supplies the audio, how many review rounds are included and when the booking becomes final. Compare the total amount, payment and cancellation terms, reporting and remedy for a missed placement. If a network proposes another show, decide whether you can reject it. If a show proposes a later episode, decide whether it still fits the campaign.
Choose the route that provides the required context and a clear account of what will run. Request a revised proposal if either seller leaves a material term unclear.
